Williams Engineering was proud to be working with GEC Architecture on this 27,000 m2 complex at the University of Calgary Research Park. The project is for a global private sector client, SMART Technologies Inc., involved in the research, design, and manufacturing of telecommunications equipment.

SMART Technologies Inc. is both the industry pioneer and market leader in versatile, intuitive group collaboration tools, including interactive whiteboards, whiteboard capture systems, and software. Headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, SMART also has offices in Japan, Germany, and Washington. SMART currently distributes to more than 100 countries worldwide.

We were pleased to have been chosen to provide electrical engineering services for this facility. System designs include standard power, emergency/standby power, telecommunications infrastructure, security systems, lighting, and building low-tension systems. The design included many LEED® and other sustainable design principals. During the design development phase of this project, we conducted comprehensive daylight, interior, and parkade lighting studies to investigate how the proposed light shelves contributed to interior illumination. The in-depth daylight study, conducted with sophisticated software, focused on this interaction while exploring the lighting control options for this building. The interior and parkade lighting studies were conducted to select the best option considering lighting quality, lighting power densities, architectural aesthetics, and the construction budget within the architectural complexities of the interior environment.

Williams Engineering is equally at home with small-scale projects as we are with large, complex projects such as the SMART Technologies building. Our multi-disciplinary approach and five regional offices allow us to distribute resources appropriately to get projects finished quickly and efficiently without sacrificing quality.
