In July of 2007, Williams was fortunate to be chosen as prime consultant for improvements to the Kugluktuk water supply and treatment system. Kugluktuk, the second largest community in the Kitikmeot region, faced many challenges in regards to its water supply.
Although progress had been made with the completion of a new water treatment plant in the late 1990s, the water supply characteristics continued to challenge the system.
The challenges included:
- Chronic excessive turbidity
- Seasonal salt water intrusion to the intake
- Sand and silt buildup around the intake screen
- Shifting of the river bank compromising the integrity of the intakes and pump house
- The need for a new intake pump house
- Sufficient water storage requirements to meet demands for the next twenty years
In addition, the challenges posed by a remote arctic location with limited resupply options had to be accommodated.
While this project is presently in the design phase, Williams has assisted the Government of Nunavut in the selection of a new intake location that is expected to be less troubled by sand and silt deposition. Design of the new intake and pump house is nearing completion and election of the pre-settling process is well underway.
Williams looks forward to carrying this project through to completion and to the provision of the residents of Kugluktuk with a safe, clean, and reliable water supply.
