Williams was retained in 2005 to provide consulting engineering services for the Stanton Territorial Hospital in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.

Williams was responsible for the following upgrades:

• Mechanical engineering consulting services for the technical upgrades to the ventilation, chilled water, medical gas, oxygenation, and fire suppression systems
• Electrical engineering consulting services for the upgrades to the communications distribution, fire alarm, nurse call and security systems
• Structural engineering consulting services for seismic review and chiller base design
• Building Science consulting services as required for the technical upgrades and building envelope upgrades

In addition to providing consulting engineering services for this project, Williams Engineering is also providing Project Management.

During the course of the initial upgrades, project hospital staff identified additional upgrade requirements. These upgrades included designs relating to:

• The Aboriginal Wellness Centre
• Incinerator removal
• New emergency ward triage area, including infection control measures design
• Clock system replacement
• Sprinkler and water system review and upgrades
• Biohazard waste area addition

These improvements were scheduled in phases to minimize disruptions within this functioning hospital and to stay within the approved annual budget for the work. The health and safety of the patients, nurses and doctors has been the first priority throughout the design and construction process, with observation of infection control requirements a major concern for the project team.
